In April 1973, a group of 15 mothers met in the Torrens Community Hall to form Canberra’s first community Playgroup. Forty-five years later, the ACT can boast over 200 Community Playgroups with 2500 families and 3500 children enjoying the Playgroup experience across the Canberra region every week.
ACT Playgroups has a range of different types of playgroups and programs to suit all families and types of life. These range from our successful drop-in Paint and Playgroup program where hundreds of families get together with us in local parks every week; to first-time baby groups, language and cultural immersion groups; nature/physical play groups; carer-type groups (like dads, grandparents or au pairs) and many others.
In addition, we run a number of facilitated groups for families with additional needs or who otherwise face barriers to playgroup participation.
We can also help anyone start a new playgroup on a particular issue or in a certain location (we help establish over 50 new playgroups each year).
ACT Playgroups holds three major events each year (attracting thousands of participants) as well as running educative programs and activities (like our regular PlayDate sessions on messy play, literacy, school transition, music and others).
Our friendly team of qualified and experienced staff are available by phone, email or visits to help playgroups and families learn together through play, so why not get in touch?
